The UK, like other countries, is obliged by international law to ensure that every refugee is treated fairly and can safely seek asylum.
A person fleeing persecution or conflict has the right to seek asylum in a country where they feel safe. The responsibility for this right is shared by all countries but the UK is lagging behind in its commitment to a fair and equal system.
The government’s latest plan is to largely dismantle the UK’s asylum system and would put the lives of many refugees at risk. It intends to deny asylum to many people in the UK because they did not arrive by a route permitted by the government. However, the government rules do not provide any permitted routes. This puts refugees in an impossible situation.
The government must provide safe and permitted routes for refugees to reach the UK and allow all people who have fled conflict and persecution to seek asylum. The current system is not fit for purpose and forces many women, men and children to attempt dangerous journeys in order to reach safety or be reunited with loved ones.
Amnesty is campaigning for an asylum system that respects the rights of refugees and honours the UK’s international obligations. Will you join us and stand with refugees?
We demand a system that respects the right of refugees to seek and receive asylum - I want to join the movement.
